PUCKETT • JACKSON
Two of the most exciting players in baseball are Minnesota's
KIRBY PUCKETT and Kansas City's BO JACKSON. PUCKETT has now played in each of the last four All Star Games and JACKSON made a big splash in his All Star Game debut in 1989.
Any discussion about who is the best player in baseball must prominently include PUCKETT, PUCKETT was the American League batting champion in 1989, finishing the season with a .339 average. He accumulated a MLB best 215 hits. He now has a streak of 4 consecutive seasons with 200 or more hits. PUCKETT also ended the season with 85 RBls, and 45 doubles. PUCKETT is equally impressive in the field where he is considered by many to be the best defensive outfielder in the league. PUCKETT is remarkably durable, having missed only 14 games over the last five seasons.
When BO JACKSON decided to pursue a major league baseball career, many people doubted he could excel at the sport while playing NFL football in the fall. In 1989, JACKSON showed conclusively that he is a legitimate two-sport player.
JACKSON's 32 home runs and 105 RBIs each ranked in the top four in the American League. He also stole 26 bases. But the highlight of JACKSON's season, and his baseball career, was his explosive performance in the 1989 All Star Game. JACK-SON led off for the American League with a mammoth home run and later stole a base. He joined WILLIE MAYS as the only players to clout a home run and steal a base in the same All Star Game.
